E. coli (Escherichia coli)is a group of bacteria that lives in the gastrointestinal tract of almost all people and animals,but someE. coli bacteria can cause serious infections,including diarrhoea,stomach ache,nausea and vomiting that usually lasts less than five to 10 days,according to NSW Health.

E. coli can also cause urinary tract infections,and some strains can cause serious illnesses such as pneumonia,meningitis in newborn babies,and inflammation of the gallbladder,known as cholecystitis.

Central Coast residents and businesses are advised:

• To bring to a rolling boil any water used for drinking or food preparation. Kettles with automatic shut-off switches can do this. Water should then be allowed to cool,and stored in a clean container with a lid,and refrigerated.
• Immune-compromised people should be especially vigilant.
• People caring for young children should be careful to avoid scalding when heating and cooling water.

Tap water is safe for bathing. There is a potential risk if water is swallowed during washing and bathing. Parents and carers could consider a sponge bath for children as an alternative.
