It is extraordinary that McGuinness’ opinion piece devotes its space to a personal attack on Anthony Albanese, when the world is rocked daily by Trump’s blizzard of executive orders. Everything from banning paper straws to forcibly turning Gaza into a Riviera, ransacking Ukraine’s mineral deposits, firing generals because of their race, taking over the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, firing thousands of federal employees, ideas of shifting America’s huge debt burden to overseas creditors, upending America’s relationship with Europe, and the threat of tariff wars to global growth. The actual and potential problems emanating from America facing this world are monumental. To criticise Albo for choosing not to participate in a film shoot 20 years ago is utterly trivial.Bill Johnstone,Blackheath

Parnell Palme McGuinness has done a cruel hatchet job on the prime minister. Regarding the Voice, she would do better to criticise Dutton, with his stock-in-trade racist tropes. The Albanese government is far more competent than the hapless Morrison government and the secret ministries and high inflation legacy.Tony Simons,Balmain

Toothless reform

It sounds like a prescription for our future health, albeit heavily focused on the capacity of what appears to be a shortage of GPs,especially in regional and rural areas (“ALP’s $8.5b boost for bulk-billing”,February 23). Yet,once again, the inclusion of oral healthcare in an oft-quoted “universal healthcare” system,is something both major parties find a bridge too far. We are constantly reminded of the importance of maintaining good health with our teeth as the impact of poor oral care is so critically related to our bodies.Allan Gibson,Cherrybrook

While the ALP’s promise to make bulk-billing more attractive to doctors will save patients some expense, people like myself who have private health insurance continue to pay ever-increasing gap fees when seeing specialists. It’s no wonder so many Australians have let their private health insurance lapse. This is an issue both sides of politics need to look at.Peter Miniutti,Ashbury

What a stupid idea. The rich should pay a fee and the poor will just be going to the doctor every time they sneeze.Mokhles Sidden,South Strathfield

Minuscule momentum

Assuming all the new citizens will vote Labor (“Ceremony about citizenship,and,perhaps,vote-buying”,February 23),this 0.000713496 per cent of new registered voters will bring Anthony Albanese the prime minister-ship for another term. I think not.Russell Stevens,Jannali

Recipe for fear

The letter (February 23) from a Mount Druitt writer who reveals the rich nature of his neighbourhood and surrounds is enviable. When you have a monoculture environment with sameness a prerequisite, then “fear of other” prevails and is easy to manipulate.Margaret Wilkie,Peregian Beach (Qld)

Hand of history

My grandmother died before I was of school age,but luckily a bundle of her letters, written to my mother, survived “clutter sorting” (Letters,February 23). They date back to a time when my mother was a teenager and continue until just before my grandmother’s death. These letters provide an insight into her life that would otherwise remain unknown to our family. One person’s clutter is another’s treasure.Joy Cooksey,Harrington

Bring back fireside chats

Kaz Ross (“What makes so many conspiracy theories so plausible to so many?” February 24) shows how conspiracy theories have spread over the past decade, aided by social media platforms’ favouring of juicy stories that allow them to sell more ads. But it was a different kind of story that allowed them to re-elect Trump, who had previously demonstrated he had no intention of ever giving up power. He now promotes Russian propaganda and is aided by Russian disinformation. Democracy is under threat everywhere in the West, and it might take some version of Roosevelt’s fireside chats to tell people what is true and what is not true.Gary Barnes,Mosman

Sing it to me

Prince Lorenzo and his gay Venetian fable are surely crying out to become a musical (“Prince Lorenzo:35 years on from Australia’s ‘royal wedding’ scandal”,February 23)?Andrew Woodhouse,Potts Point
