Police said fellow skiers noticed the accident and alerted the ski patrol.
Johnston was treated on the snow and taken to the nearby medical centre,but he was unable to be saved and died soon after.
Shore principal Dr Timothy Petterson said in a letter to parents that Johnston graduated last year.
“It is with deep sadness that I write to advise you of an accident that has resulted in the tragic death of Old Boy Oliver Johnston,” he said.
“The school is supporting the family during this difficult time. We are mindful of the network of students,Old Boys and parents who may be impacted directly or indirectly by this tragedy.”
Petterson said counselling services were being provided for students and asked the school community to pray for the Johnston family.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
