Driver charged after mother and five-year-old boy killed in crash near Ballarat

A driver has been charged after a woman and her five-year-old son were killed when a prime mover allegedly smashed into their four-wheel drive.

Emergency services were called to the crash at 12.20pm on Sunday at the corner of Kingston Road and Church Parade at Kingston,about 28 kilometres north-east of Ballarat.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives said the family of four was travelling south along Kingston Road,where it appeared the driver of the truck allegedly failed to give way at the intersection at Church Parade. Both roads have a speed limit of 80km/h.

The driver,a 59-year-old man from Western Australia,was charged on Monday with two count of dangerous driving causing death. He will appear in the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Monday.

The impact to the passenger side of the four-wheel-drive sent the vehicle flying into a paddock on the side of the road,killing the mother and son.

A child and a woman are dead after a truck rolled onto a car in Kingston,north of Ballarat.

Another child in the car,a nine-year-old boy,was flown to Royal Children's Hospital with facial injuries and is in a critical but stable condition.

His 37-year-old father,the driver of the car,was taken by road ambulance to Ballarat Base Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash also killed the family's dog,a Staffordshire terrier.

The road toll for 2019 is now at 263,compared with 211 fatalities on Victorian roads at the same time last year.
