And for those who’ve been victim to such crimes or with heightened fear of them amid across social – and traditional – media, the statements are likely to ring true.
But the state LNP Opposition’s renewed attempts to drum up that are the latest in their growing for their own gain.
Both statements, made since last Wednesday, drew on newly released 2023 police data. Both compare the total annual offences with those of 2015,when Labor returned to power after the one-term Newman LNP government.
Both point to milestones in the raw number of those offences being the worst in 17 years for unlawful entry (break-ins) or “on record” for car thefts.
But there lies the problem:comparing raw offencenumbers, not the offencerate typically used for comparisons across time and space in a way that accounts for differences in population and its growth. (The latter of which Queensland has had plenty).
Looking at the rates per 100,000 population, also laid out in,you can see while there has been growth in recent years,break-in rates are lower than their most recent peak in 2012 and across the decade prior – about half what they were at the turn of the century.
The increase in vehicle theft has been more pronounced across the past decade, but is still lower than it was two decades ago. Year-on-year change between 2022 and 2023 have been more modest.
Both break-ins and car thefts are also highly visible, and referred to as. The majority of both are disproportionately carried out by children.
While overall, and child, offender rates have been declining for many years, the number of kids dubbed serious repeat offenders has risen.
Some have speculated this could be from. Others have repeatedly warned the long-running on tough measures could also drive such change.
And despite some media reporting last week highlighting the number of all offences as the highest this century – the rate is lower than it was in 2003.
(Police themselves note the figures show this overall increase has been the result of heightened focus on and reporting of,along with – to a lesser extent – shop theft. They also point to increased fear in the community,.)
Stripping information from context for political purposes is not a new tactic. Labor is also not without fault:happy to cast the situation as an emergency to justify the inaugural overriding of its own human rights laws.
That act came in response to similar efforts by the LNP to foster a sense of crisis by claiming an at-that-stage uncertain increase in serious young offenders, with.
The LNP,under leader David Crisafulli, are now again pushing for the Miles government to act on their vague and overwhelmingly “tough” solutions when parliament returns next month.
and, crime (particularly the type alleged to have been committed by kids) will be a major focus of 2024’s political debate heading into an October state election.
People should rightly expect elected representatives, and those hoping to lead,to treat the emotive issue with the nuance it and the entire community deserves – not the simplicity which benefits them.
