The government is preparing to take action to allow Optus to share data about customers affected by a massive cyberattack with banks.
The hackers claim to have personal information on millions of Australians, although the authenticity of their assertion has not been established.
Optus has confirmed up to 9.8 million current and former customers could have had information stolen but believes the true number is substantially lower.
Now the government has the chance to prove to the public that invasive power recently introduced to manage cyber attacks actually works.
Up to 9.8 million Optus customers have had their data compromised in a major cyberattack. The company has advised them to be vigilant.
Hacker may have accessed names, dates of birth, phone numbers, addresses and passport numbers of up to 9 million customers of the telco.
