The 21 councillors,11 of whom are new appointees, will vote late on Thursday for the executive positions on the council, including the president and vice-presidents.
There are moves afoot in some quarters to oust incumbents who do not support reverting to the old title, including Bar Association president,Jane Needham SC.
But Fairfax Media understands there has been a groundswell of support for the current executive from senior members of the bar, including Bret Walker SC and Ian Barker QC.
Mr Barker confirmed that he had sent a letter supporting the current executive but Mr Walker could not be contacted before deadline.
It is rare for barristers to run a specific agenda"ticket"in the annual elections for the Bar Council. The new councillors and the organiser of the pro-QC ticket,re-elected councillor and junior barrister John Hyde Page, are leading a push to reinstate the title of QC for senior barristers over the non-royalist Senior Counsel (SC).
The latter was introduced in 1993 along with a new scheme for appointing silks.
Reverting to the old title, which has already been done in Queensland and Victoria, would require the support of Parliament to amend the Legal Profession Act.
