Earlier this year, the government and the community were outraged when Mr Fahour's previously undisclosed salary for 2016 was revealed as $5.6 million. It was around 10 times that of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Weeks after Mr Fahour's pay was divulged he announced his resignation. His replacement,Christine Holgate, will have a lower base salary and will not have the opportunity to receive the long-term incentive payments that bolstered Mr Fahour's 2017 package by $4 million. But she will be eligible for short-term incentive payments.
She will receive a base salary of $1.375 million a year, with the potential to earn 100 per cent of that as a bonus, meaning her total remuneration will be no more than $2.75 million.
The government responded to Fahour's salary last year by taking the setting of Australia Post chief executive's pay away from the Post board and handing it to the government's Remuneration Tribunal.
