Earlier,Pompeo said terrorism was no longer the greatest threat facing the world,but Xi Jinping's China was.

"The Chinese Communist Party presents the central threat of our times,"he said.

"The Chinese Communist Party under President Xi has made clear that they have an agenda that is not always consistent with the very values that Dominic[Raab] and I have been speaking about this morning.

"We have to,collectively,the West,ensure that the next century is governed by these Western democratic principles and that will take a concerted effort not just by the United States but by all of those who love freedom and cherish democracy and the rule of law."

Pompeo met Johnson for talks in Number 10 after his appearance.

In Washington,Wilbur Ross took an even stronger line on the UK's decision.

"We don't think that their solution goes as far as it should,"Ross told Fox Business.

"If it's too dangerous to trust them with the whole thing,it's too dangerous to trust them with any part of it."
