"From Monday onwards,I expect school assemblies and substantial gatherings to be cancelled, along with all excursions,"he said."The community expects schools to be as safe as possible. We are implementing these measures to provide peace of mind for students, parents and staff."
Similar steps were taken by many private and some public schools late last week, such as St Scholastica's College, which cancelled assemblies, year meetings, open days, excursions and large inter-school events.
Mr Scott said major arts and sports events will be put on hold until further notice. The event ban includes whole school sporting events and inter-school events involving three or more schools.

“Local inter-school sport and other activities can proceed but we ask organisers to ensure that as far as possible, reasonable precautions are taken,” Mr Scott said. “I trust our principals and staff to show leadership during this time.”
Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Sunday said schools would remain open, although that decision would be regularly reviewed.
Closing schools could cause students to spend time at other public places such as shopping centres, spreading the virus there. It could also force key healthcare staff to stop work to look after children,Mr Morrison said.
