After NSW Health ruled formals and graduations involving parents must be off the agenda for term three,Ms Cox created a Facebook page for captains. More than 200 have joined, and are contributing ideas the students hope to present to authorities.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday said if the number of COVID-19 cases remain low,"my expectation is that all students"will be able to celebrate important milestones.
Ms Cox has also sought advice from professional campaigners and launched an Instagram protest in which students post pictures of themselves with a sign saying,'Will You Be My Date to the Formal Gladys'?
“How can people in clubs and pubs and stadiums meet together, but we can’t have a formal with people we see every day?” said Ms Cox,the captain of Jamison High School in Penrith. “It’s upsetting that we can’t celebrate 13 years of schooling with people we’ve spent our lifetime with.”
Their ideas for a safe formal include holding it in the school hall and having it supervised by teachers, which would allow students to dress up while mixing only with people they sit beside in class every day.
