“For me it was about trying to manage that area well,I feel like I’m in control of that whether people are wide of the crease, tight to the stumps, when it’s moving or when it wasn’t,so when I go out there I feel like I can manage that well, and it’s one less thing I have to worry about.

“I played two poor shots to[Green]. The one thing he brings to the table is that extra bit of bounce and the danger you can get sucked into in these conditions is it doesn’t do as much as it does in England. So you feel like you can play at balls more frequently. And you end up getting sucked into playing a shot you don’t need to.”

On Christmas Day,these words were echoed byButtler, who in his Adelaide rearguard showed what is possible if an England batter commits fully to the goal of lasting at the crease for a long time and denying a few of their more aggressive tendencies.

“Just watching some of the Australian guys bat,the way they leave on length, the way they don’t really change their tempo as much as well, they set their stall out to bat for extremely long periods of time,” Buttler said.

“Marnus Labuschagne showed us,he was very consistent with how he played for 300 balls and that’s the way he got himself to that hundred. They’re certainly things we need to look at and have real clarity around when we leave the ball and when we attack.”
