“We’ve got the same staff across all formats too,so we might be doing it differently to some other countries,” Cummins said regarding England’s separate white- and red-ball coaches Matthew Mott and Brendon McCullum. “But we can work out ways where you manage your schedules in between rather than having totally distinct groups.

“You can share those responsibilities amongst a few of the other senior guys.[Test series and world cups] are the ones you want everyone playing for, they’re obviously the pinnacle, and then you work back from them.
“It’s maybe a little bit different to how it’s been done in the last 50 years, but as long as we’re peaking for those big tournaments and everyone is fit and firing and the captain is the captain there, the in between is not as important.”
The selectors have looked carefully at broadening the leadership options within the team to help ease the load on Cummins outside of Test series and world cups.
“Pat’s been on record that when he took the Test captaincy he wanted to step back from the vice-captaincy of the one day side,” Bailey said. “But I think being able to talk to Pat and work through that it is very much now a campaign and important to split out the formats here.
“In our one-day team we feel like we’ve got some strong leaders, really experienced members of the team, some developing leaders,so regardless of Pat being there,we are moving away from this concept of a captain taking over and their leadership being all-encompassing.
“It’s very much a collaboration at times. It’s one of Pat’s great strengths that he’s a collaborative leader. Pat as our leader is perfect,he’ll lean on different players at different times, and different skill sets on the field and off the field. I think we’ll potentially move away from a vice-captain and have more a broader leadership group.”
Asked specifically about Warner,Bailey indicated that he still felt the 35-year-old had plenty of cricket left in him,and had built up enormous respect around the team over the past four years.
“David’s leadership within the group is fantastic, titled or not, highly respected,” Bailey said of Warner. “Internally, just can’t speak highly enough of what he brings to the group,as do a number of players and with Pat,he probably won’t be there for every game, but we’ve got a number of guys who have strong leadership capabilities.”
Cummins pointed towards the example set by Finch over numerous years, including the run to the semi-finals at the 2019 World Cup in England,as key.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under ‘Finchy’ and have learnt an enormous amount from his leadership,” Cummins said on Tuesday. “They are significant shoes to fill, although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience.”
