“While staff were escorting a group of young people from recreation to their units a small number of detainees have broken away and ascended rooftops and fences,” he said.

“The centre remains secure and officers on site are working to safely resolve the incident.”

The spokesman did not confirm exactly how many detainees were involved in the disruption or whether they had been brought down from the roofs.

This incident follows another out-of-control incident at the notorious facility when it was sent into lockdown on New Year’s Eve.

During that incident at least 22 detainees set fires to buildings,scaled roofs and armed themselves with riot gear.

The centre was locked down for eight hours.

Youth custodial officers were forced to barricade themselves in rooms as two education buildings were set alight – causing hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

Special operations group officers were brought in to end the disturbance.

Corrective Services Minister Bill Johnston said earlier in the week police were investigating the incident and he expected some of the detainees would be charged.
