Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said the victim had returned home from a social event when a disturbance occurred between two groups of young people.
The victim received a wound from a bladed instrument and started walking back to his apartment before he collapsed.
Emergency services tried to assist the man,but he died at the scene.
Superintendent Smith said the incident was “tragic” and it was a “very emotional time” for the family members.
“How many times do we have to say don’t carry knives, these things wouldn’t happen if people didn’t carry knives,” Superintendent Smith said.
The area was declared a crime scene and investigations into the circumstances are continuing.
