Robertson played 23 Tests for the All Blacks around the turn of the century but has truly excelled as a coach. He led the Crusaders to six straight titles,becoming known for exciting,attacking rugby as well as his break-dancing celebrations.

The 48-year-old was the popular choice of many fans to succeed Steve Hansen as All Blacks coach back in 2019,when NZR opted instead to promote the incumbent assistant Foster.

After winning the job at the second time of asking,Robertson said it was an honour.

“It’s a job that comes with a huge amount of responsibility,but I’m excited by the opportunity to make a contribution to the legacy of the black jersey,” he said.

Robertson will return to Crusaders duty for the next few months,but said being appointed ahead of time would bring benefits.

“Having significant time to plan for 2024 and beyond is crucial to setting the All Blacks up for success during the next World Cup cycle,” he said.

“I will now have the opportunity to work with NZR to get some key appointments in my coaching and management team finalised,so we can hit the ground running next year.”
