Under the previous government’s early plans, the Redfern station upgrade was due to becompleted by late 2020 at a cost of $100 million.
However,a spokesman for Transport Minister Jo Haylen confirmed the project was now expected to be completed by November at a cost of $166 million.
“The new southern concourse bridge at Redfern station is almost complete. The remaining works on the bridge include the final finishes and grinding the exposed concrete floors,” he said.
Transport for NSW,which said late last month that the upgrade would be finished in mid-2023,blamed the repeated delays on shutdowns during the pandemic restricting the work of building contractors.
The pedestrian bridge will reduce pressure on the northern end of the station, where stairs to platforms become crowded during peak periods. The station had a lift installed in 2015,but it had served just two of its 12 platforms.
The new concourse will improve access to the Australian Technology Park,Carriageworks and the University of Sydney campus. The bridge will connect Gibbons Street,on the eastern side of the rail tracks, with Little Eveleigh and Wilson streets to the west.
