Airservices Australia enacted single runway operations at the airport at 7am due to strong and gusty westerly winds, but returned to two runways at 3pm as winds eased.
“This decision is purely weather and safety related,” a spokeswoman said, although staff shortages in Brisbane could cause more delays on Friday night for passengers flying north.
“This will affect the network until 11pm,seeing delays of between one-to-two-hours. Unfortunately, this may also see airlines decide to cancel a number of flights.”
The airport was packed with travellers waiting for flights on the last day of the school term in NSW.
One man waiting at Sydney Airport toldToday his Friday flight to the Gold Coast had been cancelled.
“They rescheduled it for tomorrow afternoon, but we’ll miss some of the things that were booked – fishing charters and accommodation,” he said.
