“We do lots of things to keep our neighbours happy, but nothing keeps them happy”:Warringah Bowls Club secretary Liarne Peek.Credit:James Brickwood
“This has been going on for two years,” said club secretary and general manager Liarne Peek. “They complain about trivia, they complain about bands, they complain about meat raffles. We do lots of things to keep our neighbours happy, but nothing keeps them happy.”
The warning issued last week by Liquor and Gaming outlined multiple complaints since December 2020,including an October 2021 complaint about a jumping castle occasionally placed in the club car park which “creates noise nuisance for up to eight hours on Sundays”.
Neighbours complained they could hear live music and the club’s Tuesday night trivia,“with some residents able to understand the trivia questions”.
They were also upset about drunk patrons, people screaming, swearing and “cheering”,and noise from children running around unsupervised on the bowling greens.

Peek said the club has scrapped the jumping castle, and since last week’s official warning, she is now locking the bowling green to prevent children playing. She has installed heavy-duty soundproof curtains, live music ends at 7pm and the pavilion is shut by sunset. The club also banned 18th and 21st birthday parties – despite their profitability – to appease the neighbours.
The new rules were also causing new headaches,Peek said, with parents unhappy there was nowhere for their children to run around.
