Usman Khawaja – 8
Another pair of serene occupations to finish the series with the most runs on either side (496). If there’s anything Khawaja will be disappointed by,it’s the fact that as the series went on,England became more effective at targeting his stumps and pads as he hung back in his crease. His fourth innings stand with David Warner gave Australia a chance.
Steve Smith – 7
A pair of smooth innings at the Oval, among his favourite English venues, but neither reached the dimensions that have made Smith arguably the best batter of his generation. In the first innings Smith and Pat Cummins were going well when the vice-captain lashed out and skied a catch. In the second he was looking secure but was unable to avoid edging a ball from the unstinting Chris Woakes.
David Warner – 7
Leaves England without a Test century on these shores from four Ashes tours. A handy start in the first innings was followed up with a sturdy 60 that was, alongside the first innings at Lord’s,his best of the series. It is now up to the selectors to decide whether Warner merits a farewell series against Pakistan at home.
