Maintenance on the north-south runway, construction of new taxiways and work on theSydney Gateway motorway near the airport’s boundaries has required changes for aircraft exempted from a curfew between 11pm and 6am.
Freighter planes and other aircraft that are permitted to land and take off during the curfew will instead use the parallel north-south runway, often referred to as the third runway.
The airport said there were between 11 and 18 flights on average a night by freighters and other aircraft during the curfew, half of which were take-offs and half landings.
Noise levels will reach about 70 decibels when aircraft pass over or near Kurnell,La Perouse,Phillip Bay and parts of Botany, which is equivalent to the sound of a washing machine. People living immediately adjacent to the affected suburbs may also hear some noise.

At present, planes using the airport’s main north-south runway during curfew take off or approach to land over Botany Bay and the dunes at Kurnell. Cronulla can sometimes be affected by flights during the curfew.
Randwick Council’s Labor mayor Dylan Parker said the council had observed an increase in aircraft noise and complaints from residents before the airport had started the upcoming work.
