Bondi Beach is about 25 metres broader than it was this time last year,Manly is 26 metres wider,Coogee is 22 metres bigger and Maroubra has grown by a generous 42 metres in the past 12 months. Clovelly, which sits within a narrow cove,is five metres broader.
North Narrabeen is the undisputed king of beach growth, adding a whopping 59 metres of sand since last year.
“They are incredibly wide at the moment,” said Dr Mitchell Harley of the Water Research Laboratory at the University of NSW.
As La Nina ebbed early this year, there were fewer storms and high winds to whip up waves,Harley explained.
Calmer waters meant offshore sandbars have tended to be pushed towards shore, contributing their sand grains to the beaches.
It means fewer swells for surfers to enjoy, but more patches of sand upon which to spread your towel.
