NSW Police last week charged a member of their executive with high range drink-driving and a backup offence of driving under the influence.
CCTV allegedly captured the officer downing more than 20 drinks at two pubs in The Rocks in May this year, before getting behind the wheel of his police-issued car and crashing it on a NorthConnex ramp.
The officer allegedly drove the car to a nearby street in Wahroonga,in the city’s north, where he abandoned it.
Top police on Wednesday denied the delay in charging the inspector was a cover-up.
“We had to wait for the legal process to takes its course, and I can’t make that go any quicker,” Police Commissioner Karen Webb said on 2GB radio on Wednesday.
“So any suggestion that there’s a cover-up or interference,I reject.”
