The Storm fullback who has had a nightmare run with injuries and concussions the past three years pounced on a Jonah Pezet kick from the scrum.
“It’s good I’m off the nudie run now,” Papenhuyzen said.
“Pezet is a really talented kid and I knew he could pull off that kick,I just had to be on the end of it.
“I feel really quick,my top speed I recorded in 2018,I’ve hit 94 per cent of that, and back then I was 60kgs. Now I’m 83kgs. Whether that’s my new top speed or not I don’t know, but I feel really confident I can hit it now. It’s just nice.”
It remains to be seen if Papenhuyzen will need another trial in Fiji next week against the Knights.
Coach Craig Bellamy initially wanted to give Papenhuyzen 40 minutes against the Dogs, then keep him on ice.
For Canterbury, there was plenty to like, including the 45-minute hitout by new fullback Blake Taaffe, halfback Drew Hutchison, and the try scored by their own comeback kid,Bronson Xerri.
Xerri was given as much time as he wanted given it was his first game in anger in 1615 days after serving as four-year doping ban.
He started at left centre, and is not without hope of playing in round one against Parramatta. His old club Cronulla await next Friday in the second trial.
Taaffe’s form at the back should see him secure the No. 1 jersey, meaning Ciraldo can start Crichton in the centres.
They have options. All they need is one or two more front-rowers.
There were no injuries.
