“It was obviously a pretty heartbreaking moment - not just for the Olympics, but I was really enjoying playing for West Ham as well, and I feel like I just got started,so I was pretty heartbroken about that as well. But they’ve been incredible, and I know the Football Australia staff are incredible as well,so I think it’ll all be fine.

“Obviously,it would be pretty devastating if I did have to miss the Olympics, but I trust in my body. I feel like I can get back and give what I can.”

Gorry is not sure how many more big moments she has left to look forward to in an Australian playing strip, having acknowledgedafter last year’s semi-final loss to England that she probably didn’t have another World Cup in her.

The Matildas don’t have another major tournament after the Olympics until 2026,when Australia will host the Women’s Asian Cup,with the next World Cup to come in 2027 in Brazil - and while she wants to play as long as she can, there are competing factors. Her partner, former teammate Clara Markstedt,is pregnant. Gorry gave birth to her daughter Harper in 2021.

“We’ll see how it goes with the second little bub,” Gorry said.

“I want to play as long as I can. Whether it’s playing a different role in the national team, starting,on the bench - doesn’t matter. If I can have an impact on the young girls coming up,if I can put on the green and gold jersey as many times as I possibly can until I feel like I’m actually done,I’ll do that because it’s a special time to be a footballer, but it’s a more special time to put on the green and gold jersey. I’ll do whatever I can to keep myself in the team for as long as I can and have these moments time and time again.”

Gorry is one of several former and current Matildas players featured in the Stan documentaryTrailblazers,to be released on June 4. The program examines the history and rise of Australia’s women’s national team. Stan is owned by Nine, the publisher of this masthead.

“As footballers, you play football. You don’t really realise the impact you have,” Gorry said.

“Obviously, now becoming a mother,it’s kind of changed the way that I look at football and I look at the impact that I have on not just players but mothers across the world as well.

“To be able to have a documentary like that to look back on,and to impact lives all across the world is something so special - and to sit back on the couch and watch it with Harper and to see how small she was back when we were doing the filming is also so special, and to reflect on our journey as well.

“It’s incredible to be Matilda and to be changing football in Australia to be able to change women’s sport in Australia,it’s something that we hold so close to our heart.”
