A Lewis Jetta goal early in the final quarter put Sydney ahead, but they dropped their bundle, conceding goals to tireless midfielder Dayne Beams and small forward Jamie Elliott, who nabbed his third. Sam Reid hit the post as the minutes wore down, but Clinton Young’s runaway goal sealed it for Nathan Buckley’s men.

“When we’re challenged,or when there is a bit of focus on us,we seem to run into Sydney, whether it’s here or in Melbourne,” Buckley said of his side’s record against the Swans. “We enjoy playing against Sydney. You know it’s going to be a hard contested ball game .. there’s nowhere to hide and it gives you a really clear focus on where to attack.

“The encouraging thing was that we got a contribution from all. If they were down early they found something in the second half.”

One was Scott Pendlebury, who had just three touches in the first quarter yet finished with an extraordinary haul of 33 disposals,16 contested possessions, nine clearances and 10 tackles.

“I thought the leadership across the board was quite strong,” Buckley said. “I thought Pendles exemplified that,Dayne Beams through the middle was excellent and I thought our backline,in particular a couple of our young boys,Jack Frost,Ben Sinclair - Maxi’s performance and contribution was really strong - held up for us when we needed and we were able to turn the tide.”

It came at the Swans’ expense and Longmire was deflated his team allowed it to happen again.

“We’re not happy with that - in the last quarter the last two[matches],both teams have kicked goals against us in the last quarter. They were probably for different reasons. Last week it was clearances. This week it was more our polish and quick kicking it forward to the opposition. We just handed it to them on a plate at different times.”

Longmire said it was up to his team to now “roll the sleeves up and get to work” before they face the Crows next week in Adelaide.

They will take some confidence into the week, with more positive performances from Franklin, who scored two goals and had 16 disposals,as well as Reid and Dan Hannebery, who led the possessions with 29,ahead of Josh Kennedy,Jarrad McVeigh and Tom Mitchell.

The win was a fitting way for the Magpies to celebrate Nick Maxwell’s 200th game for the club, while at the same time, denying Kennedy, who was marking his 100th match for the Swans, and Nick Smith, his 100th in the AFL.

The Swans’ only injury concern was Gary Rohan, who suffered some nerve pain in the leg he broke in 2012,and was subbed out at three quarter time, while Buckley said Nathan Brown will be assessed after dislocating his shoulder.
