Tears of joy for Connie Johnson as brother Samuel brings home the Logies gold

It was equal measures of tears and laughter in Connie Johnson's Kaleen lounge room last night as brother Samuel brought home gold at the 2017 Logie Awards.

Crowded around an iPhone to watch Samuel's win - the television packed it in just minutes before the big announcement - Connie and a packed lounge room of friends watched with tearful smiles as Samuel dedicated his Gold Logie to his courageous sister.

"My sister is succumbing finally to the perils of cancer after a three-decade long tussle,"Samuel told millions of Australian viewers.

"And rather than rolling over, she's going out blazing with an attempted world record for the longest line of coins,in the shape of a heart.

"The heart is being laid in 12 days and on behalf of my beautiful sister Connie, who I dedicate this award to,I'd like to urge any family watching affected by cancer,or not,to join us in our quest to keep our families safe from the terrors of cancer."

Samuel won the Gold Logie for his portrayal of Molly Meldrum in the Channel 7 mini-seriesMolly.

The Johnson siblings are the driving force behindLove Your Sister,a fundraising charity established in 2013 after Connie was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The organisation has raised more $2 million for breast cancer research in three years and amassed a supportive"village"off and online, including 380,000Facebook followers.

Speaking to the media after his win,Samuel said Australia's love for Meldrum partly explained the Gold Logie vote. But it was also driven by support from Love Your Sister.

"Facebook has been swinging elections lately and we're no exception,"he said.

"The Love Your Sister village had so much to do with it,and I'm so annoyed I didn't have the presence of mind to acknowledge it ... I had it all planned!

"It's about[my sister] Connie for me."

Mother-of-twoConnie made the heartbreaking decision in recent weeks to cease all cancer treatment. She described her brother's Logie win as"overwhelming".

"I just can't describe it ... and the fact that he used that precious air time he had to talk about me and Love Your Sister was just so special,"she said.

"I'm so proud. He spent months and months working on getting Molly just right - from facial muscle exercises to learning to talk differently."

Connie's"last hurrah"is the Big Heart Project,a world record attempt to produce the longest line of coins ever - but the coins won't be laid in a line, they'll be placed in a huge love heart at the Lyneham netball courts.

The event will take place on May 10,and Connie and Samuel will be there, front and centre.

"We would love Canberran villagers to come down and say g'day to me and it gives me an opportunity to thank them for their support over the years,"she said.
